The Japan Volleyball Association announced on Friday that they appointed Ferhat Akbas as the new head coach of the country’s women’s national volleyball team. The 38-year-old Turkish volleyball expert is set to guide Hinotori Nippon in this year’s Volleyball Nations League, as well as the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women World Championship, with long-term focus on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Akbas is the first ever foreigner at the helm of the team. He is taking over from Masayoshi Manabe, who led Japan through the previous Olympic cycle towards their participation in the Paris 2024 Games, during which the team achieved a historic Volleyball Nations League 2024 silver. They are currently number seven in the FIVB World Ranking.

“I am deeply honoured to be part of Japan's rich volleyball tradition and extremely proud to be the first foreign head coach of the Japanese women's national team,” Akbas told jva.or.jp. “I fully understand the magnitude of the challenge ahead, but I have every confidence in the players, the staff and the federation. With our combined efforts and dedication, I know we can take this team to new heights. I feel a deep connection to the Japanese culture of discipline, resilience and teamwork, and I am committed to contributing to our success. I am looking forward to the journey ahead.”

It will not be the first time Akbas is working with the Japanese national team. Back in 2017 and 2018, he was assistant coach to Kumi Nakada. Japan will be the third senior national team he is head coaching. He was at the helm of his native Turkey back in 2015 and 2016, leading them to gold at the inaugural European Games 2015 and to the 2015 CEV European Championship semifinals. Then he was in charge of Croatia in 2022 and 2023, steering the team to a Volleyball Challenger Cup crown and their first ever promotion to the VNL. Before that, Akbas also coached the Turkish U23 national team and guided them to a 2015 FIVB Volleyball Women’s U23 World Championship silver.

Ferhat Akbas is currently coaching the club team of Turkish powerhouse Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul. With them, he triumphed at the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship and claimed silver in the CEV Champions League that same year. In 2022, under Akbas, Eczacibasi picked up Club World Championship bronze and the CEV Cup trophy. Earlier in his successful club career, he collected a number of domestic trophies with Poland’s Grupa Azoty Chemik Police and Romania’s CSM Bucharest.

“I am extremely honoured that Ferhat Akbas will take on the role of head coach of the Japanese women's national team,” commented JVA President Shunichi Kawai. “In addition to his extensive coaching experience not only in Türkiye, but also overseas in countries such as Poland and Romania, and his solid leadership skills that have led his team to victory at the Club World Championship, Ferhat served as coach of the Japanese women's national team for two years and knows the Japanese players and teams very well. So I am confident that he will certainly lead Japan to the Olympics. We will work together with Ferhat to achieve our first Olympic medal since London 2012.”

Akbas should make his official debut at the helm of Japan on June 4 in a VNL game against the Netherlands. During the first competition week in Ottawa, the Japanese team will also meet reigning world champions Serbia, hosts Canada and Dominican Republic. Then they will travel Hong Kong for the second competition week, where they will take on Thailand, reigning Olympic champions Italy, hosts China and Czechia. Japan will host their week three matches in Chiba, facing France, Korea, Poland and Brazil. At the World Championship to take place in August and September in Thailand, Japan will share Pool H with Serbia, Ukraine and Cameroon.
