The never-ending battle for the top spot in the 2024-2025 Polish Women’s Tauron Liga standings had another chapter this weekend, with KS DevelopRes Rzeszów returning to first place one week after dropping from there.

With just one more leg to be held in the regular season, DevelopRes have the same 53 points as ŁKS Commercecon Łódź, but appear in first place because they have two more wins (19 to 17). Commercecon have, however, one game in hand and depend only on their own efforts to enter the playoffs as the top-seeded team in the league.

Reigning Polish Cup champions DevelopRes returned to first place after their 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 26-28, 25-20, 15-13) win over ninth-placed UNI Opole at home on Saturday. Despite the team getting back to the top of the standings, the point dropped frustrated middle blocker Weronika Centka-Tietianiec.

“It’s a little bit of a bittersweet win for us because even though we got the victory, it wasn’t as we planned,” she said. “We’re fighting for first place and we believe that if we had taken all three points today, we would have a better chance of ending the regular season ahead of Commercecon. We are in a moment of the season where tiredness is starting to show and problems are popping up. I hope we can change our approach when the playoffs begin.”

Outside hitters Marrit Jasper and Aleksandra Dudek led DevelopRes’s offense in the match, with each of them scoring 17 points, three more than middle blocker Magdalena Jurczyk. UNI Opole had the match’s leading scorers in opposite Katarzyna Zaroślinska-Król, who tallied 25 points, and French outside hitter Guewe Diouf, who delivered 22.

The Polish Cup champions stepped on the court on Saturday knowing they needed a win to return to first place after then-leaders Commercecon fell at home to fourth-placed BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała 3-2 (22-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19, 15-13) on Friday.

Pałac and Chemik make it to the playoffs

The tenth leg of the second round of the regular season also confirmed two more teams in the playoffs, leaving just one spot still available - Metalkas Pałac Bydgoszcz and defending champions LOTTO Chemik Police.

Pałac had a direct battle with eighth-placed ITA TOOLS STAL Mielec on Sunday and triumphed 3-2 (25-20, 19-25, 25-19, 24-26, 15-12). The two points earned increased their total to 25, getting them out of the reach for ninth-placed UNI Opole, who have 21.

Chemik didn’t win this weekend, falling to third-placed PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-9), but the point earned with their result was enough to confirm their presence in the postseason. They now have 24 points and, even though UNI Opole could still match their total in the last week of the regular season, Chemik would still have more wins.

The other matches of the weekend had MOYA Radomka Radom defeating Sokół & Hagric Mogilno 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22) on Friday and #VolleyWrocław downing Energa MKS Kalisz 3-2 (25-28, 25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 15-8) on Monday.

Next week, the final spot in the playoffs will be awarded – Mielec (23 points) and UNI Opole are the candidates to take it. The final leg of the regular season will also determine which team will be relegated – Kalisz, who have 15 points, or Sokół, who have 16, are both trying to continue in the Polish elite.

The final week of the regular season will start with the postponed match between Commercecon and Kalisz on Wednesday and will continue with the six duels of the 11th leg of the second round, which will be held from Thursday to Tuesday.
