Sixth time was the charm for KS DevelopRes Rzeszów as, after five straight second-place finishes, the team finally triumphed in the Polish Women’s Tauron Liga, winning the title of the 2024-2025 edition of the tournament.

The best team of the regular season, DevelopRes brought the best-of-five series of the Finals to an end on Tuesday, by beating ŁKS Commercecon Łódź 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 27-25) in their home court in Rzeszów in the third of potential five matches between the teams.

Part of the Polish elite since 2014-2015, DevelopRes have consistently been contenders in the Tauron Liga, but were yet to claim their first title. They made it to the Finals in the previous four seasons, falling to Commercecon in 2022-2023 and to LOTTO Chemik Police in 2020-2021, 2021-2022 and 2023-2024 – they were also second in 2019-2020, when the season was cut short due to the COVID pandemic.

Tuesday’s victory caps off what has been a remarkable season for DevelopRes, who also won the Polish Cup, triumphing in the tournament for the second time, and finished fifth in the CEV Champions League, matching their best result in the tournament.

“Winning the Tauron Liga has been a goal for us since the start of the season, and I’m very happy that we managed to accomplish it,” star middle blocker Agnieszka Korneluk said. “I don’t think we played our best game tonight, but taking the title was what mattered. The results we accomplished this season show that we worked really well together. After we won the Polish Cup, we got even hungrier to win the Tauron Liga too, and I’m very happy that our hard work was rewarded.”

DevelopRes counted on the strength of their roster to overcome Commercecon in the third and decisive match of the series as the team’s five starting hitters got to double digits in scoring – team captain Monika Fedusio led the way with 21 points, followed by fellow outside hitter Marrit Jasper (16), opposite Sabrina Machado (15) and middle blockers Weronika Centka-Tietianiec (15) and Korneluk (12). Jasper was the match’s MVP.

“The end of the fourth set was really stressful,” said setter Katarzyna Wenerska. “We were ahead by three points, but they came back and we couldn’t get the difference back to two. It was hard for us to do it, but in the end, it made me happy that it played out this way because it was a great final, and I’m sure the fans enjoyed it. And for me, to finally win the title after losing four finals means a lot.”

Brazilian outside hitter Regiane Bidias was Commercecon’s most productive player with 15 points, while Polish national team middle blocker Klaudia Alagierska scored nine.

“DevelopRes had been playing better than us since the start of the series, and it was the same today, so they deserved it,” setter Marlena Kowalewska reacted. “I thought that today we were finally able to give our all and fight the entire time, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. It’s a shame we couldn’t play at our best level in the most important moment, but considering everything that we went through this year, we should be proud of winning silver.”

Budowlani finish third

The best-of-five series that determined the third-placed team in the 2024-2025 Tauron Liga also ended on Tuesday, when PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź defeated BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała 3-2 (23-25, 25-12, 11-25, 25-20, 15-11) to win it in three matches.

It was the third bronze medal won by the team in the Polish League, following podium appearances in 2017-2018 and 2022-2023 – Budowlani were second in 2016-2017 and 2018-2019.

Outside hitter Paulina Damaske, with 24 points (20 kills, three blocks, one ace), and Italian opposite Terry Enweonwu, with 18 (14 kills, two blocks, two aces), played big roles in the team’s victory on Tuesday.
