The top-ranked team in the 2024-2025 Women’s Tauron Liga, KS DevelopRes Rzeszów returned to the top of the podium at the Polish Cup, triumphing in the 2024-2025 edition of the tournament, which had the Finals held over the weekend in Elbląg.

Sunday’s final featured the two best teams of the Polish League so far in the season, and DevelopRes confirmed their condition as the number one team in the country by sweeping ŁKS Commercecon Łódź 3-0 (32-30, 25-20, 25-18) to win the tournament for the second time, following their victory in 2021-2022.

One of just three players to be a part of the roster that won gold three years to continue with the team, libero Aleksandra Szczygłowska received the match’s MVP award, but she handed it to Brazilian opposite Bruna Honorio, who was with the team in their first victory but left before returning ahead of the current season.

The 35-year-old Honorio played a major role off the bench for DevelopRes in the final as she replaced one of the team’s leading scorers, compatriot Sabrina Machado, who left the court due to an injury, and led their scoring efforts with 15 points (14 kills, one ace).

“Of course, I appreciate the fact that my game was recognized, especially playing in my hometown,” Szczygłowska, an Elbląg native, reflected. “But I thought that today Bruna really deserved it. Dealing with an injury in a final is never easy, but she scored in almost every set she got. I’m proud of the entire team for how we handled it and the girls at the bench were really important supporting us too. To be able to win this trophy in front of my entire family was incredible.”

Besides Honorio, middle blockers Agnieszka Korneluk (11) and Magdalena Jurczyk (10) and outside hitter and team captain Monika Fedusio (10) also got to double digits in scoring for the winning side.

Commercecon had middle blocker Anna Obiała, who won the Polish Cup in 2021-2022 with DevelopRes, and outside hitter Natalia Mędrzyk as their leading scorers, with 13 and 12 points respectively.

“In my mind, we were ready to continue fighting after that amazing first set, but I had the impression that we didn’t hold up mentally,” Mędrzyk reacted. “We had many chances to win the first set but we didn’t take them and maybe we didn’t handle it well. The atmosphere was amazing and it was a shame that the match didn’t last longer. We continue aiming to win the Tauron Liga and we’ll probably meet DevelopRes again there, so we just need to do better.”

In the semifinals, held on Saturday, DevelopRes topped BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-20), while Commercecon eliminated MOYA Radomka Radom also with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-19) victory.
