The top two teams in the 2024-2025 Polish Women’s Tauron Liga, KS DevelopRes Rzeszów and ŁKS Commercecon Łódź meet this weekend, during the ninth leg of the second round of the regular season, in a match that will probably determine the top-seeded team for the Polish League playoffs.

The duel will take place on Sunday, at 20:30 local time (19:30 GMT), in Łódź, and will be one of the six matches held over the weekend in the country, which could also have a major impact in determining the teams that will occupy the last four spots in the playoffs, as well as the one that will be relegated by the end of the season.

Sitting at the top of the Tauron Liga standings with 51 points (18 wins, one loss), DevelopRes have a two-point lead over Commercecon, who have 49 (16 wins, two losses), and will get very close to confirming the top seed for the playoffs if they manage to increase their advantage to five points this weekend, with just two more matches to be played until the end of the regular season.

For Commercecon, a victory would also put them in control for the remainder of the regular season as they would jump ahead of their opponents while also having a game in hand against 12th-placed Energa MKS Kalisz, which could potentially take their lead up to four points, putting them in a great spot to complete their campaign as the number one team in the country.

“We’re doing well,” said Commercecon’s Slovenian outside hitter Lana Ščuka. “We are in second place, but we have one more match to play than our rivals. I really believe in the work of our team and the good atmosphere we have in our group.”

The two teams met as recently as two weeks ago, in the Polish Cup gold medal match and, after a close first set, DevelopRes took control of the match to win 3-0 and claim the title.

“I’m sure they will be determined to not losing to us again, so we can expect a lot of fight from their side,” DevelopRes’ Dutch outside hitter Marrit Jasper said. “We will also be ready for a fight and I think this is going to be a great match for both teams because these are the encounters that the fans wait for and that add a lot to the rivalry. We know that if we’ll need to beat everyone if we want to win the Tauron Liga and finishing first in the regular season is something we really want.”

Prior to their encounter in the Polish Cup final, the teams also met in the first round of the Tauron Liga, when Commercecon triumphed 3-1 on the road, handing their opponents their only defeat in their domestic season so far. Historically, the duels are always very close, with DevelopRes having a slight edge, with 16 victories to their opponents’ 15.

On Friday, defending champions LOTTO Chemik Police, who are in seventh place, will host 11th-placed Sokół & Hagric Mogilno at 19:00 (19:00 GMT).
