The 19th leg of the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca regular season will get underway on Saturday, February 8, with a big match between the second and the fourth in the current standings. Following the game between Itas Trentino Trento and Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza, another five exciting matches are set to take place on Sunday.

Itas Trentino Trento’s home game against Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza will serve off at 20:30 local time (19:30 UTC) on Saturday. Trentino are running second in the table on 43 points and a 15-2 win-loss record, two points short of the leading position, but with a game in hand. Gas Sales are in fourth place on 35 and 12-6. In November, Trentino produced a four-set victory on the road in Piacenza and improved their lead in the overall head-to-head to 16-6 in wins. After Gas Sales’ most recent victory over the club from Trento in April 2023, Itas have produced four consecutive wins over this opponent, always by 3-1.

“After the challenge in Verona, we face another big team in the standings that will arrive in Trento hungry for points and with a great desire to show their value, especially after the defeat suffered at home last Sunday against Civitanova. We want to be ready for a real battle, because we will challenge a team that has a lot of quality in important fundamentals. We arrive at this challenge with a whole week of work in the gym behind us, a unique situation before a tour de force that will see us busy every three days until the beginning of March. We will need to express ourselves in the best way, confident in our means and in the support of our fans.” Fabio Soli, head coach of Itas Trentino Trento
“We know that a very difficult match awaits us, against a team that is going through a great period. We come from a bad match and we want to show that we can do well even against the big teams. We have everything to do well. We will certainly have to make the most of every opportunity and, above all, not get lost at the first difficulties that will surely come during the match. I am happy to return to Trento, the last Italian team I played for before arriving in Piacenza.” Uros Kovacevic, outside hitter of Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza

Sunday’s programme will open with two games starting at 16:00 (15:00). In one of them, defending champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia will visit trending rookies Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina. Sir lead the current standings on 45 and 16-2, while Grottazzolina are in ninth place on 17 and 5-13. They lost all of their matches in the first half of the regular season, including the one in Perugia in straight sets, but they have now achieved all five of their victories so far within their last seven games and are already aiming at the playoff spots.

In the other, this season’s Coppa Italia finalists Rana Verona will welcome last season’s SuperLega finalists Mint Vero Volley Monza. Verona are in fifth place on 30 and 10-8, while Vero Volley managed to push themselves off the very bottom last weekend and moved up to 11th place on 13 and 5-13, still under an imminent danger of relegation. In November, Vero Volley managed to beat Verona at home in four sets.

Another two games will serve off at 18:00 (17:00) on Sunday. Gioiella Prisma Taranto, who took Vero Volley’s place in the relegation spot last weekend, will look for a speedy recovery as they entertain Cisterna Volley. Prisma trail bottom, in 16th place on 13 and 4-14. Cisterna, who shut out Prisma in November at home, are within the playoff zone, in seventh place on 19 and 7-10.

Valsa Group Modena will host Coppa Italia winners Cucine Lube Civitanova in an attempt to put a stop to their nine-game winning streak (across all completions), but most importantly to end a negative run of their own, in which they have lost eight of their nine most recent matches. Modena are still holding on to the eighth place on 19 and 6-12, but are hanging on to the edge of the playoff zone by two points only. Lube stand comfortably in third place on 39 and 12-5 with a game in hand. They swept their home match against Modena back in November.

In the weekend’s closing game, at 19:00 (18:00) on Sunday, last season’s bronze medallists Allianz Milan will host Sonepar Padova Padua. Already safe for their spot in the playoffs, Allianz will look for a way up from the sixth place they are currently occupying on 30 and 10-8, separated from Verona on set ratio. Padova, on the other hand, simultaneously still have a reasonable shot at the playoffs and face a serious risk of relegation. They stand 10th on 15 and 4-13. In the fall, Allianz beat Padova in straight sets.
