Cisterna’s Theo Faure on the block against Trentino’s Gabriel Garcia

It is time to catch up on the postponed matches of the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca. On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, the two postponed games of the 12th leg will take place and the records of all teams in terms of matches played will be balanced out, with another two full legs to go to the end of the regular season. Back in December, Itas Trentino Trento and Cucine Lube Civitanova took part in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship and that prompted the postponement of their SuperLega fixtures against Cisterna Volley and Sonepar Padova Padua, respectively.

The club world silver medallists and reigning European champions Itas Trentino Trento will host Cisterna Volley on Wednesday, February 19, at 20:30 local time (19:30 UTC). Trentino are running second in the current standings on 48 points and a 17-2 win-loss record. They are very close behind leaders Sir Susa Vim Perugia, but even a straight-set win over Cisterna would not propel them to the first place, because the two teams would have the same points and matches won, but Sir would still have one set won to their advantage. Cisterna, on the other hand, could use the three points to stamp their tickets to the playoffs mathematically, as they are currently in seventh place on 23 and 9-10, while the main candidate to possibly take their spot above the cut-off, Padova, stand six points behind them with three games to go.

Both sides are riding the momentums of long winning streaks. Trentino have won their five most recent matches, three in the SuperLega and two in the CEV Cup, while Cisterna are on a four-game run in the SuperLega, having won each of their four previous matches in five sets. Trentino are also in a series of four consecutive victories over Cisterna, whose last win over the mighty opponent dates back to January 2023. Both encounters between the two clubs this season, in the SuperLega and in Coppa Italia, went 3-1 Trentino’s way.

“For the third time this season we are facing a valuable opponent like Cisterna, who has always been able to put us in difficulty thanks to outstanding characteristics in the break point phase. I therefore expect a difficult match, which we will approach with the utmost determination, to continue pursuing our goals.” Fabio Soli, head coach of Itas Trentino Trento
“Facing Itas Trentino will be an extremely complex challenge, also because it will arrive a few days after the last match, leaving us little time to recover, but we do not want to find excuses. The victory against Grottazzolina gave us great energy and motivation. We are aware of the importance of our position in the standings and we will face this match with determination, but also with the necessary serenity.” Efe Bayram, outside hitter of Cisterna Volley

Sonepar Padova Padua will welcome Cucine Lube Civitanova at the Kioene Arena on Thursday, February 20, at 20:30 (19:30). The hosts should approach this match with double attention as they still have a shot at a spot in the playoffs, while facing the danger of relegation. Padova are in 10th place on 17 and 5-14 with a game in hand, six points below the cut-off for the quarterfinals and four points above the relegation spot. Lube, on the other hand, comfortably occupy third place on 42 and 13-6, not very likely to move in either direction through the end of the regular season. When Lube hosted Padova in late September, they won the match in four sets. The historic head-to-head record stands at 49-8 in favour of Lube.

“We definitely go back to the gym with a smile, because a victory like the one against Modena gives us great enthusiasm. But we know that another tough match awaits us here at home against Civitanova. Let's get back to work with determination.” Luca Porro, outside hitter of Sonepar Padova Padua
“We are looking forward to it. For me, Padova is always a special match.” Mattia Bottolo, outside hitter of Cucine Lube Civitanova
