Sir’s Oleh Plotnytskyi spikes against Trentino’s three-man block

No doubt the clash between the top two teams in the current standings will headline Sunday’s programme in the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca. In one of the six 16th-leg matches scheduled this weekend, defending Italian champions and undefeated table leaders Sir Susa Vim Perugia will host second-placed Itas Trentino Trento, the reigning European champions.

Sir Susa Vim Perugia and Itas Trentino Trento will lock horns on Sunday at 18:00 local time (17:00 UTC). Sir are on an impressive streak of 24 consecutive wins across all competitions that started with the final matches of the last SuperLega season back in April. They top the current SuperLega standings on 41 points and a 15-0 win-loss record. Trentino are right below them on 36 and 12-2 with a game in hand. They finished runners-up at December’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship, while their last domestic defeat in the SuperLega, at Cucine Lube Civitanova, dates back to December 1.

The only other damage Trentino suffered this SuperLega season was in the first match against the Block Devils at home. In late October, Sir achieved a 3-1 victory in Trento. Earlier this season, in late September, the two teams met in the Supercoppa Italiana final and put up a five-set battle that ended with a triumph for the team from Perugia. The overall historic head-to-head record between the two clubs, however, stands at 31-25 Trentino’s way, with their most recent win dating back to December 2023.

“We are up against a very strong team that was able to leave a clear mark on us during the first match. That defeat, due to the way it happened, had certainly taken away some certainties that we tried to regain over the following months and this match will tell us where we stand compared to our opponents.” Fabio Soli, head coach of Itas Trentino Trento

At the same time on Sunday, another match between opponents from the top half of the table will take place. Rana Verona will welcome Allianz Milan to the Pala AGSM AIM, hoping to recover from the heavy defeat at Lube last weekend. The two teams are neighbours in the table. Verona are fifth on 27 and 9-6, while last season’s bronze medallists from Milan are sixth on 24 and 8-7.

The 16th leg will open on Saturday at 18:00 (17:00), when Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza are set to start their home game against Sonepar Padova Padua. The hosts are running third in the standings on 32 and 11-4, while Padova are among the teams that simultaneously have a shot at the playoff spots and feel the threat of possible relegation. They are in ninth place on 13 and 4-10, only two points below the cut-off for the playoffs and only four points from the very bottom of the table.

The last team that managed to win a match against Sir, last season’s runners-up Mint Vero Volley Monza, are now burning in the heat of that 12th place that dooms to relegation. Trailing bottom on 9 and 4-11, they will try to change that as they entertain Valsa Group Modena in Sunday’s opener at 16:00 (15:00). Modena are holding the last spot in the playoff zone, eighth place, on 15 and 5-10.

Trending Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, who looked doomed in that last place winless just until recently, have been on the rise and are now well in the race for the playoff spots. They have a shot at further improving their 12 and 3-12 record and getting really close to the cut-off line on Sunday as they host Gioiella Prisma Taranto at 19:00 (18:00). Grottazzolina are in 10th place, just above 11th-placed Prisma, who will also look for a breath of air in the fight for survival to better their 10 and 3-12 record.

At the same time, Cisterna Volley will welcome Cucine Lube Civitanova in one of the leg’s closing matches on Sunday evening. Cisterna have been racing among the top eight for a while and now stand seventh on 15 and 5-9, but as they are on the edge of the playoff zone and only six points above the relegation spot, they desperately need to capitalize on the home-court advantage against their strong visitors from Civitanova. Lube are in fourth place on 30 and 9-5, just two points from third-placed Gas Sales and with a game in hand.
