While most places in the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca standings are to be finalized as the regular season comes to an end this Sunday, March 2, with the six matches of the 22nd leg, all starting at 18:00 local time (17:00 UTC), the main focus will fall on the existential question who will survive in the SuperLega for the next season and who will be relegated to Serie A2. Gioiella Prisma Taranto and Mint Vero Volley Monza are the two remaining “candidates” for the 12th place at the bottom of the final standings, which dooms to relegation.

Gioiella Prisma Taranto are currently in a better position. They occupy 11th place on 14 points and a 4-17 win-loss record, one point above bottom-placed Vero Volley. However, Prisma have a difficult home game against trending Rana Verona, who are in a race with Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza for fourth place in the table, which they are currently holding on 39 and 13-8, separated from Gas Sales only on set ratio. Of course, a three-point win would guarantee the club from Taranto a SuperLega spot for next season, but anything else will leave them dependent on the result in Monza. Rana shut out Prisma, when they met in Verona in December. Furthermore, the squad from Taranto is on a negative streak of four defeats in a row.
“I will give my best until the last ball, and I am sure that my teammates will do the same. We know how high the stakes are, but we have to play with an open mind and show our volleyball. Destiny is in our hands: if we put on a good performance, we can bring something beautiful to this team and to all the fans, who have always supported us.” Marco Rizzi, libero of Gioiella Prisma Taranto
For last year’s silver medallists Mint Vero Volley Monza, destiny is not completely in their hands. Currently in 12th place on 13 and 5-16, they have to rely not only on a good result in their home game against Cisterna Volley, but also on Prisma losing points in their match. Vero Volley’s guests from Cisterna have already secured a historic qualification for the quarterfinals, but now they will try to improve on their eighth place, which they occupy on 23 and 9-12, for a better position in the playoff bracket. In December’s encounter between the two teams, Cisterna beat Vero Volley at home in four sets.
The first place in the final regular season standings will also be decided this Sunday. Only one set separates defending Italian champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia from reigning European champions Itas Trentino Trento, as they stand on 54 and 19-2 each, and if the latter do one set better than the former in their matches this weekend, it will mean a switch of places at the top.
To absolutely guarantee themselves pole position ahead of the playoffs, Sir Susa Vim Perugia will have to take a straight-set win. However, they have a tough visit to Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza, who are aiming at snatching the fourth place from Verona. To help achieve that, the hosts will rely on the support from a packed Pala Banca Sport against the mighty opponent. Their previous encounter in Perugia was pushed to five sets, before Sir could celebrate the victory.
Itas Trentino Trento, on the other hand, will pay a visit to Sonepar Padova Padua, who are in a race with Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina for the ninth place, which they currently hold on 19 and 6-15. Trentino are the heavy favourites in this match, although they did lose a set to this opponent when they hosted them in November.
Table neighbours Allianz Milan and Valsa Group Modena will go head to head with different goals in mind. While hosts Allianz will need the three points in an attempt to improve on their sixth place on 36 and 12-9, and surpass Gas Sales into the fifth, the visitors from Modena need only a point to make sure they stay exactly where they are, in seventh place, currently on 26 and 8-13. In December, Allianz achieved a 3-1 win on the road at Modena.
Cucine Lube Civitanova are the only team that already know exactly where they will be in the standings at the end of the regular season. On 43 and 13-8 ahead of their home game against Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, they cannot be moved from the third place in either direction. For the SuperLega rookies, avoiding relegation is already a great success, but now they have a shot at moving one spot up from the 10th place they are occupying on 18 and 5-16 ahead of taking the next challenge, the playoffs for the fifth place. In November, Lube beat their neighbours in Grottazzolina in straight sets.
