Semifinal: Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj v BOGDANKA LUK Lublin

The defending champions of the last two seasons, recently crowned Poland Cup laureates and current regular season winners Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj are aiming at the fourth national title as they continue through their playoff journey with their first semifinal match against BOGDANKA LUK Lublin at home on Friday, April 18, at 20:30 local time (18:30 UTC). Jastrzebski Wegiel topped the regular season table on 75 points and a 24-6 win-loss record, and then went on to outplay Steam Hemarpol Norwid Czestochowa in the quarterfinals with a straight-set win at home and a tough 3-2 victory on the road.

Lublin finished the regular season in fourth place on 63 and 21-9. They had a rough start to their quarterfinal series, losing at home to ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle in four sets, but then they bounced back with two straight-set victories, away and at home, to edge forward to the semifinals. BOGDANKA has never medaled in the PlusLiga, but already has a European trophy in its showcase as it won the CEV Challenge Cup last month.

Jastrzebski Wegiel won all three encounters with the team from Lublin this season – 3-0 away and 3-1 at home during the regular season, and 3-0 in last weekend’s Poland Cup semifinal – bringing their lead in the overall head-to-head record between the two clubs to 9-1.

“What happened before is not of great importance. We know that BOGDANKA is a team that can also do a lot of damage in serving and cause their opponents a lot of problems. This is a strong team and each match against such an opponent will be a separate story. We have to work hard for success and nothing will come easy for us, but I believe that we will be ready for a tough fight with Lublin.” Timothee Carle, outside hitter of Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj
Semifinal: PGE Projekt Warsaw v Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie

PGE Projekt Warsaw scored the highest number of wins during the regular season and finished second on 72 and 26-4. They won both matches of their quarterfinal series against PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow – 3-0 at home and 3-2 on the road. With two silver and two bronze medals on their PlusLiga record, the club from the Polish capital is aiming at its first ever national title, keen on continuing to bring in the victories, which is what counts in the playoffs. On Saturday, at 14:45 (12:45), Projekt will host Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie for the first game of their semifinal playoff.

Reigning national super cup holders Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie finished the regular season in third place on 72 and 24-6. They were the most convincing team in the quarterfinals, losing only a set in the two matches against Asseco Resovia Rzeszow. On Sunday, Aluron lost the Poland Cup final to Jastrzebski Wegiel and passed their trophy on to their opponent, but now the club from Zawierce is targeting its first ever PlusLiga crown, after taking the bronze in 2022 and the silver last season.

The historic head-to-head record between the two clubs stands at 11-9 Projekt’s way, but Aluron won the two most recent encounters, including the straight-set cup semifinal on Saturday. In this season’s first game between the two teams, the squad from the capital achieved a straight-set victory at home.

“We have been preparing and focused on playing in the final throughout the season. That is why now we have to do everything to play our best volleyball. We were not able to do that (at the cup finals) in Krakow, because Zawiercie put a lot of pressure on us with their great performance. However, we will start the PlusLiga semifinals with a home match, and when you play at home, you can take advantage. We will definitely give everything we have and put all our strength on the court. We know how strong a team Zawiercie are, but we have to stand up to them, play much better than in Krakow and, above all, press harder and fight harder.” Tobias Brand, outside hitter of PGE Projekt Warsaw
Fifth place playoff: Asseco Resovia Rzeszow v ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle

After losing their quarterfinal matches, the two highest ranked teams that did not make the semis will engage in a home-an-away playoff for the fifth place in the final standings coming with a ticket to next season’s European Cups. Asseco Resovia Rzeszow, who finished the regular season in sixth place, will entertain fifth-placed ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle in the first game on Saturday at 17:30 (15:30). As evidence to the unpredictability of this playoff, the two teams traded five-set away victories during the regular season.
