Angel Ivan Dominguez Carrillo dedicated his performance to his family in Mexico’s latest win on Saturday in the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship in Manama, Bahrain.

The opposite led with 20 markers built from 18 attack points and two blocks to support Mexico’s 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22) win over Tunisia. It was the North American’s second victory in the tournament, following their 3-1 (25-18, 26-24, 20-25, 25-22) triumph over their neighbours the United States last Thursday.

“I want to give everything to my family – my mom, my brothers – for all the work they have done all this time to support me,” Dominguez said.

“I hope I am making my family proud by competing here at the World Championship. Volleyball is really helping me achieve my life goals.”

Achieving life goals are not just words to this 19-year-old, but these are values that he tries to mirror every day of his life to give and receive inspiration.

The young Mexican shared his early experiences in the sport and how his current endeavours are becoming worldly, like molding his game after his hero – Japanese superstar Yuji Nishida.

“I started playing volleyball at about 11 or 12. My uncle introduced me to volleyball. First it was just for fun and recreation, but after that I started to love this sport,” the opposite spiker said.

“I started taking it more seriously two years ago. Then a year and a half to two years ago, I was selected for the national team that will compete at the Pan American Cup in Cuba. I then continued with the U23 and U21 teams, playing in tournaments like the Pan American Cup, and now here at the World Championship.

“I love this game. I want to continue improving in this sport. I want to give my all on the court, to play in the biggest clubs in Europe, like in Italy or Poland. This is my ultimate goal.

“My favourite player is Yuji Nishida. We are both opposites and he is an exceptionally good player for me to mold my game after,” he shared.
