Reigning world champions Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano took a huge step to maintain their supremacy in the Lega Volley Femminile Serie A1 Tigotà on Saturday, when they defeated Numia Vero Volley Milano for the second time in the Scudetto Finals.

Now leading the best-of-five series 2-0, Conegliano, who are trying to win their seventh-straight and eighth-overall Italian title in 2024-2025, could lift the trophy as soon as Tuesday, when they host Milano for the third match of the Finals at the Palaverde, in Villorba, at 20:30 local time (18:30 GMT).

On Saturday, Conegliano had to overcome the pressure coming from 12,000 Milano fans that packed the Unipol Forum, in Assago, to claim their second victory in the series. After a tight first set, the Panthers found their game and never looked back, winning 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-18).

Brazilian star outside hitter Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães had a flawless performance for Conegliano. She was one of the match’s top scorers with 19 points (17 kills, two aces) and received the match’s MVP award.

“Winning this match was very important, especially on the road,” she said after the match. “The stadium was packed, and their fans made a lot of noise. We didn’t start very well in the first two sets, but when our serving improved, our blocking and defense also started working better. We have a nice lead now, but we still expect a long series and are ready to play five matches. There have been changes on both sides as the series progressed, and we’ll try to prepare well to be ready for the next match.”

Besides Gabi, Swedish opposite Isabelle Haak, with 17 points (all in kills), and Chinese outside hitter Zhu Ting, with 11 (ten kills, one block), also got to double digits in scoring for Conegliano.

On Milano’s side, star opposite Paola Egonu matched Gabi’s production with 19 points (16 kills, two blocks, one ace). Olympic champion outside hitter Myriam Sylla was the team’s second-best scorer with eight points (six kills, two blocks).

“Even if we didn’t win any sets this time, I thought we played better than in the first match,” said middle blocker Anna Danesi. “We were tied until the end of the first two sets, but then in the decisive moments we slowed down a little bit, while they continued to play at their level. The fans were amazing tonight, we felt their support the entire time. Now we need to forget our errors and keep pushing.”
