Only two teams changed positions at the conclusion of the 12th leg of the second round of the regular season of the 2024-2025 Lega Volley Femminile Serie A1 Tigotà, but it was an impactful move, with severe implications in the race against relegation in the Italian League.

After seven matches were held between Tuesday and Wednesday in the country, SMI Roma Volley got to 20 points in the standings, left the relegation zone and passed Il Bisonte Firenze, who continued with 19, ahead of the final leg of the regular season, which is going to take place on Saturday.

Roma delivered a strong performance in arguably their most critical match in the season, beating sixth-placed Eurotek Uyba Busto Arsizio 3-1 (19-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-18) on the road on Wednesday to get temporary relief.

The team entered the match knowing that if they got all three points they would leave the relegation zone after Firenze had lost to league leaders Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-23) on Tuesday and got the job done.

“We’re very happy with these three points,” Roma’s Cuban outside hitter Wilma Salas, the match’s top scorer with 24 points, said. “It was a team win. We always believed we could do it and played with great determination. We made a big step to continue in the Italian League, but we must remain focused for our last match.”

Two teams that entered the midweek round slightly threatened by relegation won their matches and confirmed their permanence in the Italian elite – Bartoccini-MC Restauri Perugia, who topped already-relegated Cda Volley Talmassongs Fvg 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-19) to get to 25 points and Honda Olivero Cuneo, who got to 24 after their 3-2 (25-16, 20-25, 24-26, 25-23, 18-16) victory over Bergamo.

Milano beat Scandicci, but continue behind

In the big match of the leg, also held on Wednesday, Numia Vero Volley Milano defeated Savino Del Bene Scandicci 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11) in a dramatic five-set battle in Monza.

Despite the victory, they continued in third place, behind Scandicci, who have 58 points to Milano’s 57. Paris Olympics MVP Paola Egonu had a tremendous performance, producing 31 points for Milano while her backup in the Italian national team, Ekaterina Antropova, tallied 20 for Scandicci.

Fourth-placed Igor Gorgonzola Novara also needed five sets to beat Megabox Ondulati Savio Vallefoglia 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 16-25, 25-17, 15-13), while Wash4Green Pinerolo overcame Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri ’76 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 26-28, 25-16).
