Conegliano set new record

The top team in the Italian League after the 26 preliminary phase matches, defending champions Conegliano made history, completing an undefeated campaign with 26 victories and 77 points, dropping just one along the way. This is the new best-ever regular season campaign in the Lega Femminile, beating the 75 points the Panthers had registered in 2023-2024.

The record was set in their final regular season match, a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-19) victory over Bartoccini-MC Restauri Perugia on Saturday. Brazilian star outside hitter Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães and Swedish opposite Isabelle Haak led the world champions with 12 points each.

“It was great that I got to play this match in front of our home fans,” said backup middle blocker Katja Eckl. “We were coming from a difficult week, in which some of our players had to deal with issues, but still managed to accomplish our goal and end our campaign undefeated. We won’t celebrate now, though, as the hardest part of the season is right in front of us with the playoffs in the Italian League and the CEV Champions League and we want to be on the court on the last day, so we have to keep working.”

Milano up to second place

The battle to finish second in the regular season and have homecourt advantage in the playoffs until the semifinals went until the last day and had Milano as the winners as they got to 60 points and passed Scandicci, who ended with 58.

The change of positions happened after Milano topped Chieri 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-20, 25-17) on the road, while Scandicci fell to Novara also 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-22, 25-15) in front of their home fans.

“We’re happy with this victory because we needed all three points to have a chance of moving up to second place,” said middle blocker Anna Danesi. “But our performance in the second set wasn’t great, we need to learn to be more consistent in some moments. I’m confident that’s going to change in the playoffs.”

Firenze avoid relegation

The battle to avoid relegation came down to a single point and had Il Bisonte Firenze passing Roma on the last day to secure their permanence in the Italian first division. Firenze needed to win their last match to have a chance of continuing in the Italian elite and they did just that, coming back from two sets down to beat Bergamo 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 30-28, 25-18, 15-13).

With 21 points, they would still do down if Roma, who had 30, won their match, but the team from the Italian capital fell to Wash4Green Pinerolo 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 15-25, 25-21) and ended up going down alongside Talmassons.

“We’re really, really happy now,” Firenze’s setter Illaria Battistoni reacted. “We never gave up and that was exactly how we managed to avoid relegation today. We had a lot of strength to react and I’m very proud of the team. It was a tough season, we were in a really difficult spot, but we gave everything we had and now we need to celebrate.”
