Conegliano also got significant production from their outside hitters as while Brazilian national team captain Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães registered 15 points, with 14 kills and one block, Chinese superstar Zhu Ting notched 11, with ten kills and one block.

“We’re very happy,” Gabi reacted. “This was a big win in a very difficult match. The first set, in particular, was incredible. We fought for each point and got to the end. It’s always a battle against Milano, but we gave our best and now we can celebrate.”

Present in each of Conegliano’s victories in the Coppa Italia, Olympic champion libero Monica De Gennaro also made history, becoming the first Italian player to have seven gold medals in the event. Formed Conegliano and Dutch national team middle blocker Robin De Kruijf, who retired at the end of last season, also has seven titles – six with Conegliano and one with Piacenza.

Egonu is the top scorer

Milano’s star opposite Paola Egonu was the top scorer of the gold medal match in Bologna, with 24 points (20 kills, two blocks, two aces). Italian national team captain and middle blocker Anna Danesi scored nine, with six kills, two blocks and one ace.

“I think that the two teams had the right mentality in the first set, but after that, they kept pushing and we didn’t,” said middle blocker Laura Heyrman. “Our energy level dropped and that’s a shame because I don’t think we deserved to lose 3-0 today. We’re improving, we’re playing better every week, but we’re certainly frustrated now.”

Conegliano and Milano will meet again very soon as the teams are set to battle on Wednesday, in the ninth leg of the second round of the regular season of the Lega Femminile.
