The final five spots in each gender at the beach volleyball tournament of the Paris 2024 Olympics were filled during the last two weeks, with the conclusion of the Continental Qualifiers.

Now, with the 24 men’s and women’s spots taken, the last step before the start of the Games will be the Drawing of Lots, which will be held at the Olympic beach volleyball stadium in Champ-de-Mars Park at the foot of the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris, on June 28, at 17:00 local time (15:00 UTC).

Here are the nations that qualified teams for Paris through the Continental Qualifiers:

Europe

The European continental qualifier was held in Jurmala, Latvia, from June 13-16, and awarded French men and Dutch women a second spot in the Games. On the men’s side, the French duos of Julien Lyneel/Rémi Bassereau and Téo Rotar/Arnaud Gauthier-Rat prevailed over squads from 11 other nations, beating Austria in the golden set in the final series to claim the tickets.

The women’s event winners were the Netherlands’, with Brecht Piersma/Wies Bekhuis and Emi van Driel/Kirster Bröring prevailing in three golden sets before topping Czechia in two matches in the final.

However, as neither of the teams met the performance requirements determined by the Dutch Olympic Committee (making it to the quarterfinals of a Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event), the Netherlands decided to not confirm their wish to use the quota place, which was then reallocated to Czechia.

South America

In South America, the women played first, from June 14-16, in the Paraguayan capital Asunción, where the host country made history, qualifying for the Olympics for the first time. The home duos of Erika Bobadilla/Fiorella Quintana and Michelle Valiente/Giuliana Poletti beat Peru in the semifinals and Argentina in the final to secure the Olympic berth.

One week later, the men played in Iquique, Chile, where the hosts secured a dramatic qualification for the Games and will have their country competing at the Olympics for a third straight time. In the final, the Chilean squad, which featured the Grimalt cousins Marco and Esteban, as well as Noé Aravena and Vicente Droguett, needed a golden set to overcome Argentina in front of their home fans.

NORCECA

The NORCECA Continental Qualifier had one team representing each country of the region still eligible for an Olympic spot in Tlaxcala, Mexico, from June 21-23, and ended with Canadian teams on top of the podium on both genders. In the men’s final, Sam Schachter and Dan Dearing defeated Mexicans Juan Virgen and Ricardo Galindo in two sets (21-13, 21-13).

The women’s final also had duos from Canada and Mexico battling and once again the visitors prevailed, with Heather Bansley and Sophie Bukovec dominating Atenas Gutiérrez and Susana Torres to a straight-set (21-16, 21-17) victory.

Asia

The AVC Continental Cup was held in Ningbo, China, from June 21-23, and had the host country appearing in both finals, but failing to qualify for the Games. Among the women, the Chinese were downed by the Japanese duos of Miki Ishii/Akiko Hasegawa and Suzuka Hashimoto/Reika Murakami by two matches to one.

On the men’s side, Australia were the winners, beating the home team by two matches to one. Mark Nicolaidis/Izac Carracher and Jack Pearse/Paul Burnett were the teams that took the country to victory in the event.

Africa

The African qualifying tournament was held in Morocco from June 21-23 and also had one team per country. The women’s winners were Egypt, who had Rio 2016 Olympian Doaa Elghobashy and partner Marwa Abdelhady beating Nigerians Pamela Bawa and Esther Mbah in the tie-breaker (15-21, 21-16, 15-8) to qualify.

The men’s final reunited duos from Morocco and Mozambique and saw home heroes Mohamed Abicha and Zouheir Elgraoui succeed in qualifying through the continental pathway for a second straight time – they defeated José Mondlane and Osvaldo Mungoi in two sets (21-18, 21-12) and will be back in the Games after appearing in Tokyo 2020.
