Ehlers/Wickler (GER) vs. George/Andre (BRA) - Round of 16 #18620772

André represented Brazil at the Paris 2024 Olympics, finishing ninth with George Wanderley

Paris 2024 Olympian André Loyola won’t appear in the tournaments of the 2025 international beach volleyball season, which include the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship and the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour, as he announced a break in his career.

In a video posted on his social media accounts, the 30-year-old blocker revealed that he had long been considering a pause to recover from mental fatigue and that he has now made a decision to do it in 2025.

“I’ve been thinking about it for some years and I’m now convinced that it’s the right thing to do,” he said. “Time goes fast when you’re a beach volleyball player and I feel that I missed a lot of things in my life in these 12 years I’ve been playing. Because of the way I deal with the sport, beach volleyball hasn’t been as fun as it used to be in the last few years. The traveling, the competition, everything became a problem. It’s a personal decision, that has nothing to do with my partners or coaches. I talked to many athletes about it over the last few weeks and many of them said that they wish they had taken some time off as I’m going to do now. I feel it’s the right time to take a break and reflect.”

André has been representing Brazil internationally since 2014 and played 93 tournaments in the period, winning nine gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals. Among his most important victories are the 2017 FIVB World Championship and the 2023 Pan-American Games.

On the Beach Pro Tour, André had seven partners, including Olympic champions Ricardo Santos and Alison Cerutti, world champion Evandro Gonçalves and defender George Wanderley, with who he shared the courts from 2019 to 2024.

“I reached the elite level very early in my career and I’ve been dealing with pressure for a long time,” he explained. “I’ve always been very committed to my career and I feel that lately, I couldn’t really relax or even enjoy my victories because I was already thinking about the next tournament or the next trip. It was getting to a point where I needed a break. If I resume my career, a lot will have to change in the way I approach it so beach volleyball becomes fun again.”

During his time off the courts, André will travel the world with his wife Vitória and dedicate his time to the beach volleyball camps he created a few years ago.

His most recent partner, 28-year-old George has announced veteran blocker Saymon Barbosa as his teammate for the 2025 season. The two are expected to represent Brazil on the Beach Pro Tour season, which starts in March, with a Challenge tournament in Mexico.
