Cheng/Shaw (USA) vs. Thamela/Victoria (BRA) - Semifinals #41210522

Thamela & Victoria celebrate their semifinal win in Saquarema

Last week’s Saquarema Elite winners Thamela Coradello & Victoria Lopes of Brazil made it to the top 10 in the women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Ranking for the first time in the pair’s history, reaching number seven as the chart underwent its weekly update after the second Elite event on the 2025 Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour. Meanwhile, two teams that did not get to the podiums in Brazil after being stopped at the quarterfinals – Argentina’s Nicolas Capogrosso & Tomas Capogrosso and USA’s Terese Cannon & Megan Kraft – still climbed to the world’s number four for their respective genders to register new highs in their beach volleyball journeys together.

In Saquarema, Thamela & Victoria picked up their second Beach Pro Tour gold and overall fourth medal out of six appearances on the Tour as a pair so far. They netted the full 1,200 ranking points that came with their Elite victory in Brazil and jumped nine spots up the chart to number seven on a new total of 5,460 points. So, after teaming up in the summer of 2024, Thamela & Victoria entered the world’s top 10 for the first time in the team’s history. Sandwiched between sixth-ranked Agatha Bednarczuk & Rebecca Cavalcanti and eighth-ranked Carol Solberg & Barbara Seixas, two Brazilian duos that no longer compete together, Thamela & Victoria appear to be the highest ranked active Brazilian pair.

Saquarema silver medalists Taryn Brasher & Kristen Nuss of the United States also bagged the entire 1,100 points they earned and that also helped them leap nine positions up the ranking, returning to number two in the world, the highest position the team has ever reached. On a score of 6,200 points from six qualifying tournaments, the Americans are still almost a thousand points short of leaders Svenja Muller & Cinja Tillmann of Germany, who took the bronze in Brazil last week and improved to a total of 7,140 points, but from a full set of eight qualifying events. Former world’s number one team Tina Graudina & Anastasija Samoilova of Latvia, who reached the quarterfinals in Saquarema, climbed two spots up to complete the top three on a total of 6,080 points.

Another team, whose Saquarema campaign ended at the quarterfinals, USA’s Terese Cannon & Megan Kraft, gained eight spots in the World Ranking and reached number four for the first time in the partnership’s history. After collecting medals from each of their previous four consecutive Elite appearances, Cannon & Kraft have now tallied a total of 5,800 points from seven qualifying events.

The Saquarema Elite men’s champions Anders Mol & Christian Sorum of Norway ascended one spot to number two in the world. They have now won five of their six most recent Beach Pro Tour events and have improved to a score of 7,600 points from seven tournaments, but still stand 820 points short of reigning Olympic champions David Ahman & Jonatan Hellvig, whom they beat in the Saquarema final. The Swedes top the chart on 8,420 points from a full set of eight events, but with some of their best results expiring in the near future and the new season unfolding in full swing, one can expect a fierce race between the two Nordic duos for the world’s number one team honors.

Stefan Boermans & Yorick de Groot, who finished third in Saquarema, shifted three positions up the ranking, from number eight to number five. The former world’s number one team from the Netherlands collected a total of 6,400 points, or 280 short of third-ranked Nils Ehlers & Clemens Wickler.

Just 40 points above the Dutch duo, Nicolas Capogrosso & Tomas Capogrosso take fourth place in the chart, which is a new team high for the Argentinean brothers. The Capogrossos did not get past the quarterfinals in Saquarema last week, but the consistency in showing good Beach Pro Tour results recently has paid off with this excellent ranking. Their previous best was the sixth place they held over the last two weeks.
