Saturday’s program in the men’s competition offered the round of 12 and the quarterfinals. Third-seeded Boermans & De Groot started their day with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-15) shutout of second-seeded Nicolas Capogrosso & Tomas Capogrosso of Argentina to advance to the duels for the semifinal spots. However, the South American brothers also moved on to the quarterfinals as one of the two best performing round of 12 losers. In the only three-setter of the quarterfinals, the Dutch pair mounted a comeback from a set down to claim a 2-1 (20-22, 21-15, 15-10) victory over ninth-seeded Mathias Berntsen & Hendrik Mol of Norway and push forward to the last four.
The Capogrossos, on the other hand, came across fifth-seeded Bryl & Losiak, who had delivered a tight 2-0 (21-18, 23-21) win over 13th-seeded Dutchmen Ruben Penninga & Matthew Immers in the previous round. The Poles also handed the Argentinean pair a 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) defeat and themselves advanced to the semifinals without any sets dropped along the way so far in Brasilia.
An epic tie-breaker marked the longest match in the round of 12. 15th-seeded Brazilians Evandro & Arthur Lanci outlasted seventh-seeded Latvians Martins Plavins & Kristians Fokerots in a 2-1 (21-14, 17-21, 31-29) saga as both duos progressed to the quarterfinals. The home team went on to put an end to the Cinderella story of young Austrian qualifiers Timo Hammarberg & Tim Berger, who had also disposed of American Olympians Miles Partain & Andrew Benesh in their previous match, before yielding to Evandro & Arthur Lanci in a hard-fought 2-0 (21-17, 28-26) straight-setter.
The Latvians, on the other hand, fell victim to top-seeded Mol & Sorum. After a tough 2-0 (24-22, 21-15) win over Canadian qualifiers Samuel Schachter & Jonathan Pickett in the round of 12, the Beachvolley Vikings went on to master a 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) sweep of their quarterfinal encounter with Plavins & Fokerots to stay undefeated in the tournament.
