In Sunday’s thrilling final, third-seeded Boermans & Grot achieved a hard-earned 2-1 (21-18, 21-23, 18-16) victory after an exciting 55 minutes on the court. The Dutch were well in control of the first set and although the 15th-seeded home favorites managed to get back to within two near the end of the set, a monster block by Boermans closed it off the Netherlands’ way. In the second, Evandro & Arthur Lanci managed to break away with a solid 17-12 advantage, but the Europeans fought their way back, leveled it at 19-19 with three in a row, denied two Brazilian set points, but on the third, Evandro aced it to tie the match. The lead in the tie-breaker changed hands several times before the set was pushed to overtime. Evandro & Arthur saved three match points until Boermans aced the fourth one to close the match.

Boermans put away seven kill blocks, three aces and 19 kills in attack to finish with a total of 29 points. De Groot chipped in with another 19 points, while Evandro produced a match-high 31 points, including five blocks and tow aces. Arthur finished with 18.

“It’s amazing!” exclaimed Boermans on the court after the match. “I’ve got the best defender in my team. I’ve got a few blocks here and there, but it was so hard for us… So compliments to the Brazilian team for making it to the final again here in Brasilia! And I’m so happy for our team that we managed to get another medal.”

“We knew that Evandro was the best server on the Tour, so we needed to be prepared,” De Groot added. “To get this gold medal, we played really well after the first matches and I am really proud of how we did there.”

In a 53-minute bronze medal match, top-seeded Mol & Sorum squeezed out a tight 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 20-18) victory over fifth-seeded Michal Bryl & Bartosz Losiak of Poland. Mol had a field day in blocking and put up as many as eight stuffs towards the victory, leading his team with a total of 25 points. Sorum was on fire in attack with 22 kills, while Bryl was the best scorer of the match with 29 points.

For Mol & Sorum, it was the second match of the day with a tie-breaker pushed deep into overtime. Their semifinal against Evandro & Arthur earlier on Sunday lasted well over an hour, but this time it was the Norwegians’ opponents that celebrated the victory. The Brazilians took out a hard-fought 2-1 (21-18, 15-21, 23-21) win, with a match-high 27 points from Evandro, including four aces and three blocks. A fantastic nine kill blocks from Mol, who led his team with a total of 25 points, were not enough for advancement to the gold medal game.

In the other semifinal, Boermans & De Groot mastered a 2-0 (21-17, 21-18) shutout of Bryl & Losiak, with Boermans leading the way with four kill blocks and 11 kills in attack.
