After the upset they suffered at the hands of Austrian qualifiers Timo Hammarberg & Tim Berger in the first leg of the Brasilia Elite main draw on Thursday, Stefan Boermans & Yorick de Groot of the Netherlands bounced back with two solid wins and made it to the second elimination round of the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour event in Brazil, as the losers matches in the pools and the first knockout round games unfolded on Friday.

Third-seeded Boermans & De Groot managed to take third place in Pool C after a hard-fought 2-1 (21-18, 20-22, 15-10) victory in an all-Dutch duel with Steven van de Velde & Alexander Brouwer, thus knocking their mighty compatriots out of contention. Boermans was the top scorer of the match with 19 kills in attack, five kill blocks and four aces. In the round of 18, Boermans & De Groot met Chilean Olympians Marco Grimalt & Esteban Grimalt and took them out in straight sets, 2-0 (21-11, 21-15), with Boermans owning the net again and producing 17 successful swings and five blocks, in addition to an ace. In Saturday’s round of 12, the Dutch pair will fight with second-seeded Nicolas Capogrosso & Tomas Capogrosso for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Another Dutch duo, 13th-seeded Ruben Penninga & Matthew Immers, also scored two wins on Friday to stay in the tournament. They beat Austria’s Julian Horl & Moritz Pristauz by 2-0 (21-15, 26-24) for the third place in Pool A. In their round of 18 game against American Olympians Chase Budinger & Miles Evans, Penninga & Immers came back from a set down to earn a 2-1 (16-21, 21-13, 15-9) victory. Next, they will take on fifth-seeded Michal Bryl & Bartosz Losiak of Poland.
The remaining first elimination round matches were won by teams who came in as pool runners-up.
Canada’s Samuel Schachter & Jonathan Pickett, who started their Brasilia campaign from Wednesday’s qualifiers, are already in the round of 12 after a 2-0 (21-16, 21-19) sweep of their encounter with Italy’s Samuele Cottafava & Gianluca Dal Corso. They will now challenge top-seeded Norwegians Anders Mol & Christian Sorum.
Eighth-seeded Miles Partain & Andrew Benesh of the United States put together a 2-0 (21-16, 21-17) shutout of Sweden’s Jacob Holting Nilsson & Elmer Andersson and will face Austrian sensations Hammarberg & Berger in the next round.
11th-seeded Australian Olympians Mark Nicolaidis & Izac Carracher achieved a 2-0 (21-16, 21-18) victory over sixth-seeded Adrielson Dos Santos & Arthur Da Silva of Brazil and advanced to a round of 12 encounter with Norway’s Mathias Berntsen & Hendrik Mol, seeded ninth.
Finally, Brazilian Olympians Evandro Oliveira & Arthur Mariano Lanci delighted the center court crowd with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-12) shutout of American qualifiers Chaim Schalk & James Shaw to set themselves up for a game with seventh-seeded Latvians Martins Plavins & Kristians Fokerots.
